Join the Lawrence and Appleton Communities in Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Many cities and states across the United States have replaced the Columbus Day holiday with the official recognition of Indigenous People’s Day. Lawrence University welcomes the entire Fox Cities community to join in celebrating and learning about the many contributions of Indigenous people globally through song, dance, food, and local Native American guest speakers/leaders.

By driving with us you can help someone not only get to their place of work but also regain confidence in their daily schedule. With your help, a single mother can worry less about traveling to and from her 9-5 job, a young man will be able to attend his interview on time, and a grandmother will be able to work her part-time job at a local store.
On the evening of Thursday, August 25, The League of Women Voters of Appleton hosted keynote speaker Elaine Weiss, author of the highly acclaimed narrative history The Woman’s hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote.
An accomplished storyteller, Ms. Weiss riveted the well-informed audience with details and photos, allowing them to feel that they almost were present. For three generations the suffragettes persisted, continuing to organize even after repeated failures and, for many years, lacking even the telephone (invented in 1876).
The campaign began with the 1848 Seneca Falls convention, at which Frederick Douglass was the only man to express support. Through a world pandemic, a civil and world war, numerous failed state campaigns, court battles and petitions to Congress, it culminated in marches and protests (which resulted in some arrests, imprisonment, and force-feeding), that led to the Nineteenth Amendment:
In July, nearly 200 people participated in the first monthly gathering and started learning how to stand up for truth in public schools. Many people want to keep our children from learning about our country’s troubling past and present regarding how African-American, Native American and other people of color have had their land, labor and liberty stolen from them.
Since that first Zoom meeting, people in all parts of the state have taken action (like joining Prayer Vigils and testifying at School Board meetings), More than 200 people have taken the Faithful Equity Pledge. All are invited to this month’s meeting as we work to keep building the momentum and to keep organizing.
If you want truth (even when it hurts) and equity taught and practiced in our schools and in our whole society, join this meeting to learn how to keep your voice heard, and not drowned out by the voices of those who are afraid of the truth.
This initiative is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Council of Churches, WISDOM, Wisconsin Faith Voices for Justice, Wisconsin Council of Rabbis, and the Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin.
Celebrate Diversity Fox Cities will be hosting its annual Community Cookout on Saturday, August 21, 2021 from 11:00 am-3:00 pm. Come celebrate progress with food, entertainment, and laughter. The theme for this year is, “We All Call This Home.”
In the training, participants will learn what lobbying is and how to have a successful meeting. Participants will get to put their newly learned skills into practice with a mock lobby meeting.

The WISDOM network, to which ESTHER belongs, is offering this overview and orientation for people who have recently become active with a WISDOM affiliate or who would like to know more about current priorities, programs and projects.
The program will discuss what community organizing in the WISDOM network is all about, including the “Attitudes and Disciplines of Organizing.” WISDOM’s issues will be presented, including how WISDOM tries to make a difference in the public arena. There will be an explanation of how the various affiliates and organizations in the network fit together with WISDOM and Gamaliel. Most of all, we’ll talk about why this work is important – and there will be time in groups for new members to talk about why they want to be involved in it.
At the end, there will be break-out groups for local organizations. Participating organizations (including ESTHER) will have at least one officer or organizer on the Zoom, to help newer folks understand what’s happening locally.
