Following the presentation, a panel discussion will take place featuring people who have been directly impacted by Wisconsin’s horrific, racist system of mass supervision.

Join us as we watch the play, Like an Animal in a Cage: Voices from Solitary Confinement. Melissa Ludin from EXPO (Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing) will provide a first-hand account of the horrors she survived in solitary confinement.
A replica solitary confinement cell, created by Wisconsin’s Prison Ministry Project based on the exact specification of a segregation cell in a Wisconsin state prison, will be available for you to see, hear (there’s a sound track), and reflect on. Cell available beginning at 5:00 pm and after the program.
This event is part of the Pathways to Recovery Lecture Series, sponsored by Bev Kelley-Miller and the Megan Kelley Foundation. ESTHER and EXPO are co-sponsors of this event.

This presentation by Sean Wilson, Smart Justice Statewide Organizer for the ACLU of Wisconsin, describes the ACLU of Wisconsin’s multi-year effort to reduce Wisconsin’s jail and prison populations by 50 percent and to eliminate racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Jonathan Cloud, a 33-year human services veteran, will speak on research findings on brain development and effects of childhood trauma on youth behavior. This research has led to new strategies and changes to training on how juveniles should be treated in juvenile justice programs. Cloud is the author of Parenting the Guardian Class: Validating Spirited Youth, Ending Adolescence, and Renewing America’s Greatness, which argues for empowering youth rather than controlling them. This educational forum will provide background for the Youth Advocacy Consensus meeting, to be held on Wednesday February 6.
