The WISDOM network, to which ESTHER belongs, is offering this overview and orientation for people who have recently become active with a WISDOM affiliate or who would like to know more about current priorities, programs and projects.
The first two hours will be spent discussing what community organizing in the WISDOM network is all about, including the “Attitudes and Disciplines of Organizing.” WISDOM’s issues will be presented, and how WISDOM tries to make a difference in the public arena. Time will be given to talking about how the various organizations fit together with WISDOM and Gamaliel. Most of all, we’ll talk about why this work is important – and there will be time in groups for new members to talk about why they want to be involved in it.
For the final hour, there will be break-out groups for local organizations. Participating organizations (including ESTHER) will have at least one officer or organizer on the Zoom, to help newer folks understand what’s happening locally.

This Saturday, May 9, WISDOM* is offering an online training program on the topic of “Effective Meetings.”
Organizing for systemic change requires a lot of time spent in meetings. This training will offer a chance to reflect on why we go to meetings in the first place – and to think about what it takes to make them a really good use of our time. There will also be a lot of practical information in this training, designed to be useful for anyone who has a role in designing and carrying out meetings.
To build power we have to organize people. One of the ways we do that is through meetings. We might as well do them as well as we can!

“We the People” Truly Means “All the People”
Mark Charles is a speaker, writer and consultant. The son of an American woman of Dutch heritage and a Navajo man, Charles seeks to understand the complexities of American History regarding race, culture and faith in order to help forge a path of healing and reconciliation for the nation.
Charles is noted for his activism in denouncing the Doctrine of Discovery and opposing the Dakota pipeline. In May of 2019 Charles announced that he is running for President of the United States as an independent in the 2020 election.*
In addition to this event, Mark will be preaching at First Congregational UCC of Appleton on October 20 at the 8:45 and 10:30 am services.

The VR experience runs about 9 minutes and will be available for viewing between 3pm-4:15pm and again between 7pm-8pm.

Follow the lives of three DACA students in Georgia as they take on activism in a state that has banned them from attending their top state universities and disqualifies them from receiving in-state tuition at any other public college. (documentary film)
Screening will begin at 4:30 with a discussion afterward.

“The Gift of Our Wounds” authors Pardeep Singh Kaleka, a Sikh, and Arno Michaelis, a former white supremacist, share a message of forgiveness and compassion while addressing a host of social issues, including violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, religious intolerance, Holocaust remembrance and genocide prevention.
The co-authors are also co-founders of Serve2Unite. They will speak about how to understand incidents of hate and how to intervene when encountering hateful acts or incidents. Kaleka, who lost his father Satwant Singh Kaleka in the August 5th, 2012 Sikh Temple shooting in Oak Creek, and Michaelis, a former white supremacist who helped to start a gang back in the late 1980s that produced the August 5th shooter, founded Serve2Unite in 2013 to share their message of forgiveness after hate.
