10th Annual ESTHER Banquet Featuring Sr. Helen Prejean

Join us as we celebrate a Decade of Justice at ESTHER's 10th annual banquet!

We are very excited to have Sister Helen Prejean as the keynote speaker for our gathering!  Nobel Peace Prize nominee, most prominently known as the author of the book Dead Man Walking, also adapted into a movie and opera. She is steadfast in her fight for fair treatment of those incarcerated and her stance against the death penalty. Sr. Helen sparks the national dialogue on capital punishment and compassionate treatment of prisoners. She engages the faith community to take action.

Meal options include pistachio crusted mahi mahi, roasted sirloin, and vegetable stir fry (vegan/gluten-free).

Free film - Dead Man Walking - at Appleton Public Library November 12

Poster for Dead Man WalkingThe movie Dead Man Walking, based on the celebrated book by Sister Helen Prejean, will be shown at the Appleton Public Library on November 12. Sister Prejean will be the keynote speaker at ESTHERs tenth anniversary banquet on December 7.

The film stars Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon, who won the Academy Award for best actress for her portrayal of Sister Helen. Dead Man Walking is exciting and moving, and the experiences portrayed in the movie were the beginning of Sister Helen’s lifelong commitment to campaigning against the death penalty and for humane treatment of those who are incarcerated. Mark your calendar.

Latino Simulation, Martin Luther King Day, Saint Norbert College

On January 20, in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Saint Norbert College hosted a presentation of “In Our Shoes,” the Latino Similation developed by ESTHER with support from ThedaCare’s Community Health Action Team. More than 50 people took part in the experience. Click below to see what happened.

Annual Banquet set for Nov. 3; get your tickets now!

Byran Bartow, Director, Wisconsin Resource CenterByran Bartow, director of the Wisconsin Resource Center in Oshkosh, will be the keynote speaker at ESTHER’s ninth Annual Banquet at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at Liberty Hall, 800 Eisenhower Drive, Kimberly. Festivities include music and a silent auction. Current and new members are welcome, as well as other friends, supporters and guests. The cost is $40 per person, $70 for a couple, or $350 for a table of 10. Inspiration Marks Madison Action Day 2013

Madison Action Day Podium on Capitol StapeMore than 900 People of Faith United for Justice from all around Wisconsin – including 80 from the ESTHER – traveled to Madison on March 14 to bear witness to the importance of social justice and to ask our legislators to support 1) funding for treatment instead of prison (11x15); 2) public transit; and 3) accepting federal funds to expand Medicare.

ESTHER members marching to the Capitol in MadisonPeople of Faith United for Justice is a day-long gathering to learn, discuss, pray and take action on justice issues such as prison reform, public transit, affordable housing, transitional jobs, and more. We gather at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison for plenary sessions and lunch, followed by a march to the capitol and meetings with legislators.

Treatment Alternatives and Diversion Funding, the focus for 11x15, is one of the issues this day. Funding for transportation is another.
