The son of an American woman of Dutch heritage and a Navajo man, Charles seeks to understand the complexities of American History regarding race, culture and faith in order to help forge a path of healing and reconciliation for the nation.

Charles is noted for his activism in denouncing the Doctrine of Discovery and opposing the Dakota pipeline. In May of 2019 Charles announced that he is running for President of the United States as an independent in the 2020 election.*

In addition to this event, Mark will be preaching at First Congregational UCC of Appleton on October 20 at the 8:45 and 10:30 am services.

Drivers’ Licenses for All Teach-In

 

People without documents cannot get drivers’ licenses in Wisconsin. In 12 states and the District of Columbia, they can. Drivers licenses for all benefit all—ensuring safer roads, generating revenue for the state, and creating a thriving community.

The public is invited to join the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Shared Sanctuary Committee and ESTHER’s Immigration Task force to learn more and to find out what you can do to support this effort. Voices of Hope Reader’s Theatre will start the evening, followed by a teach-in on this issue.

Free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for Unidos!

Talking About Stereotypes: Interactive Program

League of Women Voters of AppletonThe March program of the Appleton League of Women Voters will provide opportunities to explore the topic of stereotypes with fellow LWV members and guests. Karen Nelson, Diversity Coordinator for the City of Appleton, will share presentation duties with Irene Strohbeen, LWV VP for Programs. Members of Celebrate Diversity Fox Cities will also participate.

The presentations and discussion will explore the harmful impact of even positive stereotypes, and then examine definitions of commonly-used diversity terms before we discuss in smaller groups.

The goal is for each person attending to identify things we can do as individuals to overcome stereotypes and break down barriers to inclusion.

Copper Rock is providing the venue at no charge, so please buy food and beverages to enjoy throughout the meeting! Come early if you want to order food—the program will begin promptly at 5:30.

Sean Wilson, ACLU of WisconsinThis presentation by Sean Wilson, Smart Justice Statewide Organizer for the ACLU of Wisconsin, describes the ACLU of Wisconsin’s unprecedented multi-year effort to reduce Wisconsin’s jail and prison populations by 50 percent and to eliminate racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

“Wisconsin locks up more African-American males than any other state in the country, and our state government invests more money into prisons than it does the entire University of Wisconsin System.” -Sean Wilson

Jonathan Cloud, a 33-year human services veteran, will speak on research findings on brain development and effects of childhood trauma on youth behavior. This research has led to new strategies and changes to training on how juveniles should be treated in juvenile justice programs. Cloud is the author of Parenting the Guardian Class: Validating Spirited Youth, Ending Adolescence, and Renewing America’s Greatness, which argues for empowering youth rather than controlling them. This educational forum will provide background for the Youth Advocacy Consensus meeting, to be held on Wednesday February 6.
