It throws the moral and legal issues associated with immigration into high relief, and it forces us to take a stand. This reader’s theater presentation, directed by Kris Clouthier, is based on interviews from Peter Geniesse’s book Illegal: NAFTA Refugees Forced to Flee.

One of over 700 events around the country on June 30 where, together, we will raise our voices loud and clear and call for an end to family separations and to the suspension of due process at the border.
People of good conscience from across the country and across the political spectrum agree on this: Families belong together. We've got to make this clear to our government: Reunite families. Close family prison camps. And hold the abusers accountable.

ESTHER is pleased to bring this event, hosted by the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, to the attention of ESTHER members and friends.
Laureen Anderson-Stepanek, an immigration lawyer, will present on allyship and substantive steps we can take to support immigrant rights vs. the “feel good” response. We will also hear from the leadership of Unidos Por Un Futuro Mejor, a local immigrant rights and education group. The Fox Cities SURJ Rapid Response team will present on meaningful ways we as bystanders can respond to emergency situations and disrupt detainments. The Fellowship Shared Sanctuary Committee will provide education on the sanctuary movement and ways to be involved in this effort at the Fellowship.
Ms. Anderson-Stepanek, a partner in the Chicago law firm Katsivalis & Anderson Law, LLC, has spent her whole legal career as an immigration lawyer, concentrating, her practice in complex immigration matters since 2002. As Ms. Anderson-Stepanek's practice has grown she has expanded into the areas of family and removal defense, specifically those related to criminal issues and appellate matters, including to the federal court.

ESTHER is pleased to bring attention to a recent letter from two ESTHER member congregations: The Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the Winnebago Worship Group, Religious Society of Friends (Quaker). These congregations have both gone on record in declaring that they will house those threatened with deportation should the need arise. Their letter says, in part:
The Winnebago Worship Group, Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) and the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship are the two congregations in the Fox Cities that have declared themselves to be Sanctuary Congregations. While no individuals are currently living in sanctuary, many in our community are relying on us to provide support in other ways …[including] showing up in the wake of immigration raids and providing financial support for legal services and a range of household needs. We are running out of money to do this critical work.

Marijke van Roojen and Marie Luna travelled to Tornillo, Texas, over Christmas to protest the children’s internment camp there. In spite of Tornillo having since closed, family separation and child detention continue.
