Community Conversations: A Faithful Response to Housing Needs

Posted in

We would like to invite you and your congregation to Community Conversations: A Faithful Response to Housing Needs. This event is being co-hosted by Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church and ESTHER Oshkosh to allow faith community leaders and members to connect and learn more about how we can respond to housing needs in our community.

A bit more about the event:

  • WhenMonday, April 4, 2022 -  6-7:15 pm
  • Where: Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, Oshkosh (building located at the corner of New York and Algoma Blvd - parking and entrance along Algoma Blvd).
  • Why:  Many of our Oshkosh Community Members are struggling to find safe and affordable housing. Oshkosh is experiencing a rental vacancy rate of less than 2% (a healthy rate would be 5-7%), rental rates and home prices are skyrocketing, eviction moratoriums are ending, and homelessness is increasing. These challenges can be solved if we work together. Faith communities came together many years ago to start a warming shelter in Oshkosh - we can come together again to learn, share resources and take action.

Please spread the word and by sharing the attached flyer. Join us for this important event!

Student Bus Ridership in Oshkosh Exceeds All Expectations

After seven years of advocating, raising money and attending City Council meetings, our Oshkosh ESTHER Task Force successfully petitioned to allow all Oshkosh students to ride the bus for free, effective July 2020. During that first month of implementation, a total of six students rode the city bus. We were understandably concerned that, even if bus rides were free for students, they might not actually take advantage of the benefit.

We need not have worried! According to recent ridership data from Go Transit, there were 2,587 student riders in July of 2021. That is a whopping 47,516 percent incease from the previous year. For 2021 to date, there have been 38,037 student riders, as compared to 103 for the same period in 2020.

This program has proved to be a phenomenal success, exceeding all expectations. We are grateful to the Oshkosh Common Council and the Oshkosh Area School District for their efforts in making this happen.

Community and ESTHER Connections

Contributed by Kathy Weinhold

When I initially joined Esther it was at the recommendation of someone who attended my church. My initial interest was in the prison justice reform group, and I eventually became aware of the Oshkosh ESTHER group. As I live in Oshkosh, I decided to check it out, and I’m so glad I did!

At the first Oshkosh ESTHER group meeting I attended I was warmly welcomed. Compared to the large prison reform group, this smaller-sized group appealed to me. Each person in the group was able to share their ideas, comments and concerns all along the way in the process of working through issues.  At subsequent meetings I found it’s always that way.  The folks recognize that everyone brings something different to the table.  We all know it’s often who you know, and among them they have great connections.  Everyone’s input is greatly encouraged.
