Join members and friends of ESTHER at Jefferson Park in Menasha on the evening of July 20 for an ice cream treat and an outdoor showing of this special film.
About the film: For decades, child welfare authorities have been removing Native American children from their homes to “save them from being Indian.” In Maine, the first official Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the United States begins a historic investigation. Dawnland goes behind-the-scenes as this historic body grapples with difficult truths, redefines reconciliation, and charts a new course for state and tribal relations.
- Please try to arrive between 7:00 and 7:30. You will want to have time to enjoy some ice cream and socializing.
- Brief program at 8:00 featuring highlights from ESTHER’s task forces and an introduction to the film.
- Dawnland (1-hour movie) begins at 8:30.
- Please bring lawn chair(s).
- In the case of rain, the film will be shown in the pavilion.

Dawnland aired on Independent Lens on PBS in November 2018, reaching more than 2 million viewers. The film won a national Emmy® Award for Outstanding Research in 2019 and made the American Library Association’s list of 2020 Notable Videos for Adults, a list of 15 outstanding films released on video within the past two years. About parking: Entrance to the Jefferson Park new parking lot is at the intersection of Konemac and Second Streets. Parking is also available along Ice Street and along Kargus Drive (one-way entrance along the river is at the intersection of Ice and Broad Streets).
