Saturday, April 28, 2018 - 11:00am - 3:00pm
Location:
West Side Moravian Church, 1707 S Oneida St, Green Bay

ROC Wisconsin LogoThis event is part of the Race to Justice campaign, a series of local training and organizing gatherings being held this spring in locations around the state, with a focus on justice system reform in Wisconsin as an issue in the 2018 gubernatorial and state legislative races.

You are invited if you are a current ROC (Restore Our Communities) Wisconsin leader, ally, friend, or simply want to get involved. We will get clear about some of the many issues; we’ll practice telling our stories and hearing the stories of the people who have been most affected; we’ll get ourselves organized; and we’ll make plans for the next six months.

There is no charge for the the event. A light lunch will be available for a small donation.

Car pooling is being organized from the Appleton area. Meet in the parking lot at the east-side Target Store (1800 S Kensington Dr, Appleton, WI 54915-4136) at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 28.

Immigration Reform Is Still Needed!

Posted in

70% of Americans Support Dreamers' StayingThe Senate failed to act last week on extending DACA or protecting Dreamers. So the fate of millions of immigrant young people still hangs in the balance.

We can’t let Congress and the Administration wait this one out, hoping we will lose focus or tire of fighting. It’s a looming disaster, and it has to be prevented.

Here are two things you can do today:

  • Learn what proposals are now being discussed. This article from The Atlantic is a good place to start.
  • Call the White House, call your members of Congress, call the Congressional leadership to remind them that time is running out and to let them know that you support the Dreamers and want common-sense, humane immigration law changes now!

2017 Banquet a Rousing Success

Posted in

2017 Banquet Crowd - image by Mark RiceOver 225 people—a full house—gathered at Liberty Hall last Sunday evening for ESTHER’s 13th annual banquet. The spirit in the room was amazing. ESTHER recognized Kris Clouthier for her exceptional, sustained efforts in sharing Latino/a stories through ESTHER’s Latino simulation, Walk in Our Shoes, as well as the “Voices of Hope” readers theatre. Bob Pedersen, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries North Central Wisconsin, was honored for his creative, energetic, and people-focused leadership of this truly transformative organization in the Fox Valley.

Keynote speaker Glenn E. Martin shared from the heart and the head in challenging America's addiction to dehumanizing punishment, not only in prisons but throughout our culture: “70 million people in the United States have a criminal record. You can't criminalize 70 million people unless you dehumanize them first.”

It was great to be joined by many who were attending an ESTHER banquet for the first time. We especially enjoyed being joined by members of ExPO (Ex‑Prisoners Organizing) from the Fox Valley and throughout the state, as well as representatives from JOSHUA, RUTH, WISDOM and others.

If you were there, you know what a great evening it was. If you missed it this year, do plan to join us in 2018!
