History and Culture of AfghanistanFor 20 years the U.S. fought the Taliban in Afhanistan for harboring those reaponsible for 9/11. Even though hundreds of Afghan people assisted our soldiers, we have learned very little about them. This webinar features three panelists (see below) who will explain some of the Afghan history, culture and resettlement.

Panelists:

Mamadou Coulibaly, History of Afghanistan

Although University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Professor Mamadou Coulibaly specializes in Geographic Information Systems, he has been teaching a variety of courses, including World Regional Geography and People, Places, and Cultures of the World, since 2002. Dr. Coulibaly obtained his Ph.D. (in Geography) and Masters’ degrees (in Geology) from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Originally from the Ivory Coast in western Africa, Dr. Coulibaly has been living in the Fox Valley for 19 years. He currently serves as president of the Fox Valley Islamic Society.

Tariq Basharat, Culture of Afghanistan

Tariq Basharat is a second-year PhD student at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. His research focusses on the development of pre-Islamic historiography and its relationship with Nationalism in Musahiban-era Afghanistan (1930-1978). He is interested in how Afghans viewed and shaped the narrative of their own past and how that shaping subsequently played into wider developments within Afghan society such as modernization and ideologies.

Tami McLaughlin, Resettlement

Tami McLaughlin is the Director of World Relief Fox Valley, the local refugee resettlement agency whose work focusses on helping refugees and other immigrants in vulnerable situations rebuild their lives. A native of Wisconsin, she is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Hotel and Restaurant Management, and spent her early career in Association and Convention Sales with Marriott Hotels. McLaughlin was introduced to World Relief while living in Atlanta and started her career there as an employment specialist, assisting refugees to find jobs.
